Discussion Title: Should people have children when overpopulation exists? 1. Having children is not a good idea when overpopulation exists 1.1. Con: Taking action can be overdone and cause the opposite issue where if everyone adopted instead of procreating, after 18 years there would be no more children left in the world, and a generation or two after that the human species would [go extinct](https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/nnkz5k/what-would-happen-if-young-people-stopped-having-babies). 1.2. Con: When problems exist, people may find ways to innovate \(as curiosity and survival are part of human nature\). So making a tough situation even tougher through having kids will create the struggle and time crunch needed to spur innovation. 1.3. Con: Debating whether kids when overpopulation exists does not matter much when outlets to decrease population when it gets too high exist, like space colonization. 1.3.1. Con: The issue is that space colonization is a last resort, and if people keep continuing the issue of overpopulation without working on it and then expect to rely on space colonization to save everything and it doesn't or fails to live up to its reputation, then it will still be a bad idea to have kids when overpopulation exists \(even if there are solutions\). 1.4. Con: There is strength in numbers. The more people that have children, the more minds that can think about and resolve the issues that overpopulation causes. 1.5. Pro: Children grow up with a lower quality-of-life with overpopulation. 1.5.1. Pro: Living in crowded conditions is not beneficial to a person's wellbeing. 1.5.2. Pro: Overpopulation's effects on the environment causes human suffering. 1.5.3. Pro: It's better not to have a child than to have one with burdens and problems placed on them to live with and resolve from before they were born. 1.6. Pro: People have a responsibility to contribute to society and having children when overpopulation exists conflicts with that. 1.7. Con: Deciding not to have children due to feeling guilty about it might be detrimental, depending on where they live, especially in countries that still rely on children being born to keep stable and productive. 1.7.1. Pro: [Many countries](https://www.edge.org/response-detail/23722), including Japan, Germany, and Russia, have declining populations. Further limiting the population would exacerbate the problems of labour shortage and overburdened pensions that underpopulation already causes.
