Discussion Title: Teleportation would be beneficial if it exists. 1. Teleportation would be beneficial if it exists. 1.1. Con: [Transportation is a factor in social mobility](http://studylecturenotes.com/factors-of-social-mobility-gender-industrialization-education/), so the teleportation improvement could create/increase the anti-social effects of it. 1.1.1. Pro: It would be majority socially awkward if someone cold just up and teleport out of a conversation 1.1.2. Pro: Social mobility creates [anomie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anomie), which increases mental health issues involving an anti-social component, like [stress](https://www.sapling.com/8742089/social-mobility-advantages-disadvantages) and [alcoholism](https://thepsychologist.bps.org.uk/negative-effects-social-mobility). 1.1.3. Pro: [Fiercer competition for jobs](https://www.sapling.com/8742089/social-mobility-advantages-disadvantages) from greater social mobility could lead to [strain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strain_theory_%28sociology%29): a societal structure that leads to more crime. 1.1.4. Pro: The improved social mobility [increases the expectations/requirements](http://www.shareyouressays.com/essays/essay-on-consequences-and-importance-of-social-mobility/87390) for it, which leads to a decrease in social contact and support beyond what is necessary and healthy. 1.1.5. Pro: Since the expectation of people to be upwardly mobile, if a person happens to go downwards instead, [alienation and 'social discord'](http://www.shareyouressays.com/essays/essay-on-consequences-and-importance-of-social-mobility/87390) come with it. This fall wouldn't happen if social mobility's not available. 1.1.6. Con: The increase in social mobility can help individuals with talents [get recognized](http://www.shareyouressays.com/essays/essay-on-consequences-and-importance-of-social-mobility/87390) for them, which elevates their life. 1.1.7. Pro: Uncertainty caused by social mobility could [decrease motivation](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2352250X1730057X) in 'class migrants'. 1.2. Con: Teleportation would eliminate the concept of a private space, as anyone could teleport to it. 1.2.1. Con: There could be anti-teleportation materials or zones where teleporters would be unable to teleport to, such as private residences or secure military/governmental areas. 1.3. Con: Sure, teleportation might be beneficial if it exists, but it won't only do us good. For example drug dealing or weapon dealing. People could just send those things around the world without crossing any countrys/borders. It would be something else if the government keeps the blueprints a secret from public. But if everyone has access to them, then who knows what's gonna happen to this world. 1.4. Con: Teleportation can be dangerous. 1.4.1. Con: People can get out of situations they don't want to be in more easily. 1.4.1.1. Con: This is not necessarily positive, for example because people could teleport out of prison or psych wards. 1.4.2. Pro: A teleporter might be killing you and creating a copy at the destination, which would leave a vast death toll if teleportation became a common mode of transport. 1.4.3. Con: It would make going to places easier. 1.4.4. Con: Point-to-point teleportation of information could increase data security by, for example, eliminating the current reliance on crackable encryption methods. 1.4.5. Pro: Since it's really hard to imagine the physics behind creating this, it may be hard to fix in emergency situations. 1.4.6. Pro: There may be unforeseen physical consequences such as [false vacuum collapse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_vacuum#Existential_threat), which may threaten reality itself. 1.4.6.1. Con: If we can teleport, then we may know of risks before they occur - by going to where an event occurs and letting everyone know before it reaches them. 1.4.6.2. Pro: Since we don't know what happens where, someone who teleports may accidentally travel into an event that no one was aware of it happening. 1.4.7. Pro: If someone goes somewhere and the teleporter stops working, then a person can be stuck there. 1.4.8. Con: Teleporting information without needing to teleport material is not dangerous, as material has unique complications \(like, but not limited to, difficulties with reconstructing on the other side\). 1.5. Pro: It's environmentally friendly. 1.5.1. Con: Not necessarily - teleportation could take [so much energy to power](https://phys.org/news/2013-07-infinity-teleporting-humans-space.html) that it does more environmental damage than current modes of transport. 1.5.2. Con: We cannot yet be certain what resources widespread teleportation would require. 1.5.3. Pro: People would not need to create roads to travel on. 1.5.4. Pro: The reliance on fossil fuels could decrease. 1.5.5. Pro: Air travel and its pollution would become obsolete. 1.5.6. Con: Teleportation would quickly overcrowd many popular spots, for example holiday destinations, thus harming the environment there. 1.5.6.1. Con: There would be many more holiday spots to choose from, as most nice spots today are hard to get to and thus often not even being used as holiday spots. 1.5.6.2. Pro: More people will have more time to vacation, due to less time invested in transportation. This would lead to overcrowding, because people can vacation for longer at the spots than usual. 1.5.6.3. Con: People may likely not crowd vacation spots, as they would be able to arrive and leave very quickly when finished \(as getting to and from the spot creates overcrowding too - think of traffic and parking\). 1.5.6.4. Con: People could repair the environment faster with teleportation, so there wouldn't be much damage in the end. 1.5.6.5. Con: People are probably not going to vacation much more than now, as they may find other activities more fulfilling and desirable than this. 1.5.6.6. Con: Popular spot could only hold so many people. If people see a place that's crowded, they'll likely not like the place and not go again. So the population there is likely to reach only a certain level that's below overcrowding eventually. 1.6. Con: Criminals might be able to get away with crimes more easily. 1.6.1. Con: If police are able to track teleporters, it may help police easily track anyone who escapes via teleporting. 1.6.2. Con: Law enforcement will have the same teleportation capabilities as criminals and will thus be able to appear wherever a criminal goes now instantaneously. 1.6.3. Pro: -> See 1.1.3. 1.6.4. Pro: Teleportation would make fleeing the police very easy, as you could just teleport to the other side of the Earth. 1.6.5. Pro: Teleportation would make physically securing spaces against intrusion impossible. 1.6.5.1. Con: Instead of making it hard for people to get into physical spaces, you would start making it impossible for them to be in spaces that should be protected. 1.6.5.1.1. Pro: You could install non-lethal weapons that would stop them in their tracks, once they entered a secured space. 1.6.5.1.1.1. Pro: You could tranquilize them with gas or a dart. 1.6.5.1.1.1.1. Con: There are health risks, as some might suffer from health problems after being tranquilized. 1.6.5.1.1.2. Pro: You could shoot them with glue which would make it very hard for them to move. 1.6.5.1.1.2.1. Con: Even if they could barely move, they may still teleport out in this state. 1.6.6. Con: The other way around, law enforcement would also have an easier time to search for. chase and capture criminals. 1.6.7. Con: Law enforcement will likely keep up with criminals, as they'll have access to the same or better technology, as seen in the movie [Jumper](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489099/). 1.6.8. Pro: Using portals would help with theft, as one could move material through portals pretty easily. 1.6.8.1. Con: This could be avoided with the invention of anti-teleportation material, which can be put on items such a bank vaults which stops people either teleporting in or the material being teleported out. 1.7. Con: It would be a detriment to vehicle businesses. For example, train or bus transport industries would be destroyed. The car industry might also be negatively affected. 1.7.1. Con: Teleportation will likely be infrequent and only for extreme situations, as it's dangerous, difficult, or expensive. This means it will likely not impact the transport industry. 1.7.2. Con: New industries will emerge to replace what's lost. 1.8. Pro: It would progress humanity by being another technology that is no longer science fiction, but in reality. 1.9. Pro: Travel and colonization in space would be much easier to achieve. 1.10. Pro: It would help provide rapid transportation over great distances. 1.11. Pro: People can have greater freedom. 1.12. Con: People might feel like teleportation solves more than it does, so it may set people up for failure. 1.12.1. Pro: The associated personal cost of world-changing technologies could generate significant economic disparities between rich and poor. If the technology is only affordable to a small minority, it could exacerbate class divisions, which is detrimental to e.g. social mobility.
