Altruism - types
Background
Altruism is creating the most good. The method to get there is delineated in each type of entity that is focused on - along with how it turns out (i.e. outcome and effectiveness).
process
Altruism is creating the most good. The method to get there is delineated in each type of entity that is focused on - along with how it turns out (i.e. outcome and effectiveness).
process
- user -> creator
- i.e. - taker -> giver
outcome
key terms
- who do we put our care into the most?
- what do we want to see succeed (out of it)?
key terms
- opportunity - altruism takes challenges as that
- -> - reach utopia
when something comes to you - it's about figuring it out rather than discarding it as a nuisance
Personal
The altruism I follow is egoistic, but also optimistic - somewhere in between is where I lie - I'm a part of both.

List
It's really hard to find a list on the internet with every single type of altruism on there (not to mention conflicting info), so I created one here:
if you try to please everyone - you end up pleasing no one (think Sears)
- style - gentle
- type - respectful
- i.e. - win-win - positive-sum helping oneself
- w/o - hurting others
- but - helping them
- if - it's possible
- but - helping them
- w/o - hurting others
- i.e. - win-win - positive-sum helping oneself
- type - respectful
- my top - preference
- why I put it - at the top
- of - list
- reason - because you can only guarantee benefits - in the way you expect it
- w/ - yourself
- not - w/ others (i.e. - no guarantee)
- -> - keep going (i.e. momentum)
- in - original direction
- w/ - yourself
- why I put it - at the top
- note - not to be confused with egocentrism
- stops short
- reason - selfish
- because it ends with the self
- rather than sharing the self's extras with others
- "An egocentric person is concerned with the individual (themselves) rather than society."
- egoistic altruists - care
- about - society
- by - helping oneself -> help others
- ex - getting an oxygen mask
- -> breathe -> help others
- w/ - theirs
- -> breathe -> help others
- ex - getting an oxygen mask
- in - respectful way
- descr - give > take
- egocentrics - take > give
- descr - give > take
- by - helping oneself -> help others
- about - society
- egoistic altruists - care
- "An egocentric person is concerned with the individual (themselves) rather than society."
- rather than sharing the self's extras with others
- because it ends with the self
- reason - selfish
- doesn't work
- reason - egocentrism doesn't convert -> optimistic altruism
- which is what the world needs -> achieve it's potential
- it stops short at the individual reaching it
- and even then - in a way that's - inefficient, useless
- i.e. - there's interdependencies that strengthen others
- -> build yourself - >size
- through - others
- note - people can be islands
- but they lose out to those that're open and share
- through egoistic altruism
- but they lose out to those that're open and share
- ex - if someone makes $100, but only needs $80 (i.e. will never ever use that $20 oneself)
- egoistic altruism - keeps the $80
- but shares the $20 - w/ others
- which builds themselves up more
- through others
- in a way that benefits them
- until a person doesn't need anymore help
- and they can help others out instead
- which is when egoistic altruism - converts -> optimistic altruism
- and they can help others out instead
- until a person doesn't need anymore help
- which builds themselves up more
- but shares the $20 - w/ others
- egocentrism - would keep all the money for themselves
- whether they need it or not
- out of building oneself only
- i.e. - 0-sum game
- egoistic altruism - positive-sum game
- whether they need it or not
- egoistic altruism - keeps the $80
- -> build yourself - >size
- i.e. - there's interdependencies that strengthen others
- and even then - in a way that's - inefficient, useless
- it stops short at the individual reaching it
- which is what the world needs -> achieve it's potential
- reason - egocentrism doesn't convert -> optimistic altruism
- note - the confusion comes from definitions saying that altruism can't be egoistic
- ex's - collins, thefreedictionary, dictionary.com
- which isn't true
- otherwise egoistic altruism couldn't exist
- stops short
- style - gentle
- optimistic
- enhancing everyday life's conditions
- i.e.
- the basis of my life

- transhumanism
- the basis of my life
- effective
- should be called ineffective altruism
- reason - selfish
- problematic - reasons
- doesn't - work
- or does so - ineffectively, temporarily
- makes it one of the worst altruisms
- reason - appealing
- makes it one of the worst altruisms
- >risk - for -> ineffectiveness
- ex - FTX
- showed that - you're working with unknowns
- reason - benefits others
- issue - no - guarantee
- of - impact
- unlike - egoistic altruism
- issue - no - guarantee
- can't be improved upon
- compared to - optimistic altruism
- can be doc'd - trial/error, guesses
- speed - < - visions, common sense
- issue - eventually - stalls
- i.e. - stops working
- reason - each person's work undo's the other
- without getting anywhere
- unlike - optimistic altruism
- without getting anywhere
- issue - eventually - stalls
- speed - < - visions, common sense
- reason - benefits others
- showed that - you're working with unknowns
- exception - if you have extremely high brain power
- where you know - everyone's fate + impacts of change of fate -> it won't create problems that negate benefits
- or does so - ineffectively, temporarily
- at most - indirect benefit
- problem - not sustainable
- reason - no personal direct benefit
- problem - burnout
- i.e. - net negative = putting more work -> other's benefit that might not continue everything -> indirect benefit = potential fizzling out
- problem - burnout
- reason - no personal direct benefit
- problem - not sustainable
- doesn't - work
- should be called ineffective altruism
