2-17-24 - amern horses - nativity, rewilding
background
Nativity
Each entity provides a different angle towards the connection between horses and the americas. It seems as though they originate from the americas millennia ago. Then they left to asia a few thousand years ago (~5-6k) (via the bering strait). People were migrating from asia at least 10s of thousands of years ago via the bering strait. There's likely been interactions between humans and horses back then.
Extinction - horses
The question is whether or not humans were consciously (if it's unintentionally - it doesn't matter - as that's nature - coexisting) influenced horse populations back then to modify their migration patterns and drive them to extinction by eating them. The answers are not provided by these links. So the possibility remains (until confirmed it didn't happen) that newly formed and established americans could've consumed horses for meat, as it's well known that they've eaten other animals - like bison, fish, etc. to survive. Also there's some semblance of domestication skills - like with llama. This domestication happened for thousands of years to around the time of horses leaving. Humans already domesticated animals as they came into the bering strait - and ate them too - ex - dogs. Ppl brought these animals in with their own migrations. Also horses were domesticated in asia once there. It's possible that horses were taken out of the americas intentionally to be domesticated and could've been eaten in the americas to the point of going extinct there.
Rewilding
It might be possible that native horses are alive in some form, but aren't noticed nor seen. Still - the presumption is that they went extinct. The question is about whether or not the horses that're in the americas are rewilding populations or not. And that comes from whether or not humans disrupted their natural migrations and flow.
It's possible that there's some reasons that it shouldn't be rewilded - if they came in to asia naturally. But since it's possible they came in via boats and were domesticated in asia, and possibly in the americas - that humans definitely messed up their migrations and populations. There are reasons to rewild them back. Is it possible? It's not entirely difficult, due to time being close enough to allow for what was lost to be mostly regained. Also due to climate change - they could've become what they are now naturally (i.e. - genetically, morphologically). However, this isn't much of an issue - because horses are a solution to climate change - and so they will rewild themselves.
It's even possible that 'horse trails' created migration patterns for humans that they followed and so they might've influenced their own domestication - via intermingling with humans. They might've not wanted to stay wild - who knows - and that might've been natural for them. Another question is whether or not these animals desire this. Since many are abandoned, neglected, etc. - having a decent life with healing is better than no life or a neglected one. But to consciously desire domestication - makes the decisions of rewilding on us humans - since that might be what horses want.
Still - the way they've been reintroduced is haphazard (one org uses cave paintings to replicate what a horse should look like) - with christopher columbus, and various dept's - like the BLM - actively trying to control feral populations. Many horses are actively domesticated in the US. It's not done in a way that is for the animal's nature - much of it has been due to domestication needs. Some org's are trying to bring their nature back, but without rewilding them back to replace what's lost - it's going to be difficult to make the transition without creating harm in the process.
Animals from other continents were bred for many years before coming into the americas again hundreds of years ago. So what is reintroduced might not be suitable. It's important to rewild them before bringing them back - or at least bringing them as far as possible and continue the efforts of rewilding in the americas - to restore what's lost and finish human's consciously disrupting influences on their populations.

The question is about whether or not the horses that're in the americas are rewilding populations or not. And that comes from whether or not humans disrupted their natural migrations and flow.
- potential - because there is a possibility that humans intentionally brought in to asia. And for that - it's well known that humans went back into asia via the bering strait. They could've brought horses there intentionally - and made horse populations go extinct in the americas.
- while some say climate change brought about migrations of horses out of the americas
- this doesn't make sense - as the climate would've been more suitable for horses to stay in the americas
- since the bering strait closed around 12,000 years ago - then horses coming into asia around a few thousand years ago likely did involve human aid.
- maybe horses went into asia before then?
- if so - then it would've had to be 10s of thousands of years ago
- which would make rewilding horses harder
- if so - then it would've had to be 10s of thousands of years ago
- maybe horses went into asia before then?
- while some say climate change brought about migrations of horses out of the americas
- def - rewinding the conscious impacts of humans on disrupting the nature of wildlife and their ecosystems.
- genetic changes - the next question is whether or not the horses coming into the americas viably replace the ones lost to them
- a few thousand years to 10s of thousands isn't too long for rampant genetic changes from what used to be
- so it might be possible to restore what's lost
- w/o - much disruption
- these horses do adapt pretty quickly to land lost
- and work with the land
- unlike invasive species
- but horses sometimes have invasive traits
- so it's possible that the rewilding isn't fully happening

0:34 people die of disease instead
0:47 most common reason - cardiovascular (heart) disease
1:14 #1 disease - prediction for 2040: ischaemic heart disease
1:42 age increases age-related diseases
1:52 high cholesterol - increases heart disease x20
1:58 80 > 20 year old - 500x increased heart disease risk
2:40 curing all cancers increase life expectancy by 3 years
3:00 wrote book, because it's not about just dying, but aging before that leads to that fate too that matters
3:07 delaying age-related treats them all at one time
3:14 delaying helps with also morbidity, not just mortality
3:23 aging risks x2 every 7 yrs
3:34 slowing aging by 7 years reduces death risk by 1/2
3:48 the anti-aging field is riddled with cons, scams, and get-rich-quick schemes
3:55 scam's well-known in the medical field
4:09 lots of misinformation in this field
4:15 most widely known 'scientists' (gerontologists) in the field contribute heavily to the pseudoscience
4:24 rely on evidence for what we feed ourselves (not anecdotes)
4:33 why Dr. Greger cites everything as much as possible
4:49 - how not to age ended up with 13000+ citations
4:53 the list is freely available online, hyperlinked to download all the studies
5:10 aim - cover every possible angle - for the most optimal diet for the longest, healthiest lifespan with the best evidence
5:25 inspiration for writing the book: consensus document 'interventions to slow aging in humans: are we ready' by longo in aging cell journal
5:43 scientists in the paper tried to find the best anti-aging pathways able to be tested with humans
5:51 ex's - drugs blocking igf-1 and tor -s6k enzyme
6:03 diet can do these too
6:09 is what section 1 of book is about
6:24 the term 'antiaging' should switch from scrupulous advertising to targeting bodily molecular mechanisms
6:30 called 'hallmarks of aging' - degeneration at the stem cell, intercellular communication, genome, telomeric, epigenetic, proteostatic, nutrient sensing, mitochondrial, cellular senescent level
6:35 one example - buildup of misfolded proteins (chaperone's highlighted) that can be disposed of via autophagy
6:50 at one time - cells assemble >10k different proteins, with fragility susceptible to misfolding/damage at any time
7:01 with nutritional excess, the body will trash the damaged ones and make new
7:14 but due to humans evolving to handle scarcity - this trashing process gets delayed till times of scarcity
7:19 scarcity hardly takes place these days, so the protein trash accumulates instead
7:28 autophagy etymology - auto - self, phagein - to eat, autophagy - self-eating
7:43 autophagy does both salvaging and quality control when cleaning up what contributes to aging to help renew cells in a 'cellular reset' sense
7:58 "janitor is the undercover boss"
8:02 ancient ancestors constantly had autophagy, dealing with constant scarcity
8:12 due to no more need to clean up to make room for sustenance - there's accumulation, which is detrimental
8:18 autophagy is sufficient and essential for life extension
8:31 self digestion for lifespan extension - by 12% in mice
8:39 autophagy boosts healthspan - leanness, insulin sensitivity, impaired motor function
8:47 autophagy decreases with age
8:48 garbage accelerating aging with a lack of autophagy letting garbage pile up - vicious cycle
8:49 the pharmaceutical industry wants to combat this progress pharmaceutically
9:01 can be done without them
9:07 ex's - autophagy
9:12 issue - only happens after 1-2 days after, which by then, can lead to malnourishment - that decreases autophagy (which needs proteins, specifically enzymes, to operate, but is used by other parts of the body as a greater priority)
9:21 fasting should ideally be done under medical supervision in a live-in clinic, not at home
9:31 otherwise the body can lose valuable electrolytes, especially salt, in the kidneys
9:45 which usually isn't recognized (dizziness, tiredness, weakness, etc.) till it's too late
9:45 alternative - exercise
10:13 activates after an hour
10:26 avoid acrylamide (at least according to petri dish samples)
10:38 mainly in potato - chips, fries, from frying
10:45 acrylamide doubles the risk of early death
11:23 c-reactive protein (a.k.a. inflammation) increased (by 50%) with chip consumption compared to boiled potatoes
11:39 deep frying forms other toxins outside of acrylamide too
12:04 air-frying reduces acrylamide by 90%
12:14 starving's discomforting
12:19 coffee (any type) activates autophagy
12:49 those drinking 3+ cups/day reduces mortality by 13%
13:05 due to >1000 biactive compounds
13:08 chlorogenic acid (CQA) is what brings forth autophagy
13:24 range: 6-188mg
13:29 starbucks low in CQA
13:40 reason - excessive roasting
13:46 freeze-drying's fine
13:52 brewed > espresso, paper-filtered > unfiltered
13:59 paper - traps cholesterol-raising compounds
14:08 decreases mortality even more
14:17 spermidine, w/ byproduct spermine - found throughout body
14:37 many names (musculamine, neuridine, gerontine) for it combined into 1 when found to be the same
14:46 naming defaulted to original - spermidine
14:53 sources - body creates its own, diet
14:58 spermidine levels decline w/ age - except in naked mole rats (other names - sand puppy, desert mole rat), which don't age because of this
25:05 legumes for longevity, hummus for health
25:13 followed by - whole grains, nuts
25:26 even changing at 60 yrs old adds about 8 yrs for women, 9 for men
25:31 80 yr old - >3.5 yrs
26:01 even replacing 3% of calories from animal protein to plant protein <mortality by 10%
26:13 eggs - worst source of protein
26:19 swapping eggs with plants = >2x benefits
26:33 premature death - harvard found it's processed red meat > eggs
27:24 out of exercising, plant-based eating, or neither - plant-based eating worked for <DNAmGrimAge close. Exercise did nothing
27:35 unhealthy eating index - functional impairments, vitality, mental health, health conditions - even 1% caloric change to vegetable protein was significant
27:57 5% - reduces dementia
28:05 someone who eats no meat - <3x dementia
28:10 worst for human diet - salt
28:46 at 50 yrs old - salt - <1.5yrs (women) - 2yrs (men)
29:32 replacing half salt - w/ potassium = <40% CVD deaths
29:44 >14yrs lifespan
30:55 salt industry believes it's more expensive to live longer
31:20 >1/2 middle-high income countries have SOS foods (which is why it's unfair to discriminate against the wealthy, who end up in a worse position than the poor for food options)
31:24 unhealthy (SOS) foods don't <mortality, but rather > it
32:13 same with diseases, like cognitive impairment (dementia, depression, etc.), frailty, etc.
32:37 why Dr. T. Colin Campbell coined WFPB in the 1980s
32:54 in a WFPB experiment (vs regular vegan food) - WFPB saw weight loss and cholesterol
33:19 1 regular burger = smoking 2 cigarettes
33:36 wfpb - <gerontotoxins (>aging toxins - like AGEs - i.e. glycotoxins)
33:36 AGEs exist in raw animal products - cooking (in dry heat) - > it - by 10-100x
34:05 AGEs form from the maillard reaciont - muscle cell rupturing combines with glucose (and fructose) stored in muscles (and blood vessels within it)
34:18 worst -> best - oven frying, frying, broiling, roasting, boiling/poaching/stewing/steaming - 1/2 cut from broiling -> boiling
34:46 impacts artery function within hrs
34:51 even boiled is not safe from doing this
35:02 AGE less diet - heat - moist > dry
35:05 dietary approaches - 0 commercial value
35:11 stewed chicken doesn't taste as nice as fried
35:17 people can take a drug - Kremezin - to block absoption of AGEs.
35:26 it's just activated charcoal
35:44 oceans - humanity's sewer and trash dump
35:49 'everything eventually flows into the sea'
35:57 contaminated seafood - #1 source - exposure -> chem pollutants
36:04 #1 source of ddt - fish, followed by meat, fats, dairy, cheese, eggs, poultry
36:10 same with PCBs
36:13 especially salmon, then canned tuna, beef, butter, fried chicken, catfish
36:22 salmon's also highest in dioxin compounds
36:31 used to be touted as a health food, but no more
36:38 instead has - heavy metals, pesticides, flame retardants, forever chem's
36:45 omega 3's < contaminants
36:52 used to be <contaminated - pre-industrial rev
37:03 salmon now leads to insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, obesity, fatty liver, inflammation, etc.
37:26 mercury - <brain health
37:36 100k's babies born w/ brain damage - due to eating fish during pregnancy
37:44 intelligence loss - costs $bil's/yr - in lost productivity
37:57 someone who was thought to have alzheimer's dementia and about to die - actually didn't, but had mercury poisoning instead from eating swordfish 1-2x/wk and recovered once removed from diet
38:21 these misdiagnoses are likely to happen as seafood gets more contaminated
38:36 same with hair loss, especially in peri-menopausal women with tuna - which regrew completely once removed from diet
39:01 recommendation - doctors should screen for mercury toxicity when there's hair loss
39:35 alcohol 7th leading cause of death/disability - worldwide
39:45 safest level - none
39:56 j-curve - appearance of 1-2 drinks lower mortality than 0 drinks - is wrong - due -> misclassification of former drinkers as lifelong abstainers
40:09 dubbed the 'sick quitter effect' - the reason someone quit is due to the alcohol hurting someone so badly - it forced them to
40:18 this artificially made drinkers look good in comparison
40:21 also accounts for why those who keep smoking seem to live longer > quitters
40:31 poor health -> abstention, not vice versa
40:40 j-curve disappears - when corrected for the sick quitter effect
40:54 true abstainers - look good in comparison
41:06 even red and white wines - cause inflammation w/in hours of consumption > sugar water
41:19 along w/ surge of fat in bloodstream unseen with dealcoholized red wine
41:31 resveratrol <inflammation in brain -> <brain tissue size (dr greger came to the wrong conclusions on this one)
41:45 healthiest drinks - water, tea
41:50 3 cups any tea/day - all death - <24%
41:56 green > black
42:03 reason - <pneumonia
42:09 <flu too
42:15 <DNA damage - w/in 1hr, since it boosts DNA repair enzymatic activity
42:33 within 2 mths, green tea prevents this automatically

what a visceral reaction, but since vegans try to shut down various operations of theirs, it makes sense that the backlash occurs in the same way. My hope is for vegans to switch up their tactics, so that those tactics aren't used against them. These farmers are likely hurt by vegans always attacking them, so why not work together instead? Maybe farmers are met where they're at and not have it pushed on them (it sounds like it could've been based on the title). Marginalizing people I feel isn't a way to help someone out. I prefer meeting people where they're at and helping them transition if they feel, or at least helping out on the farm to alleviate the farmer's struggles to be able to listen and see how to help them through their struggles to be able to do something about it. Just berating others is only going to add onto their burdens - so they'll have to work twice as hard to keep what they're doing going.
Well the issue is really at the college level. Colleges put in various initiatives without consulting students first. It's not really the farmer's place to blockade veganuary, but if they have a contract and the school is upending it - then I can see why the farmers would do this. See students pay to go to the college, so it's a 'you get what you pay for, otherwise don't sign up and go here'. So the college can do what it wants. I don't really like veganism targeting schools the way it does - it kind of is making me lose respect for veganuary because of what they're doing - trying to go where they're not wanted. Did they do their research, veganuary? Did they consult anyone? Or did they just push their way anyway? I'm tired of forcefulness, because that's not vegan. It's too pushy, maybe they can just approach it properly to make sure everyone's on board instead of frustrating and possibly hurting others. It's too much, enough's enough.
But in the end, this is making me realize that maybe veganuary is a misnomer, that it's one of those pseudo vegan conversion campaigns part of the animal rights movement, rather than veganism itself. Well now I know better. Glad I see this article, because unfortunately the pseudo vegans keep hijacking veganism to look bad by parading off their name and hopefully one day vegans will rise above it to stop this from happening. I saw this coming - they're clearly gatekeeping, because their recipes are faux products anyway, which to me isn't truly vegan. Tired of the fake, I see why the college apologized, but vegans need a game plan to provide colleges with a real vegan option that they can go to instead. Veganuary can do what it wants, but it doesn't mean others should participate in it.
Colleges are really known for this level of toxicity - they do social experiments of shoving different ideas into people's lives without proper vetting, and get backlash all the time for it. It's not fair to anyone, but they do it for clout, etc.
Anyway - what I did like about the article is that because of this backlash, the actual vegans came out and did help. "To try to help bring about a sustainable transformation of British farming, activist group Animal Rising has launched a new project – Vegans Support the Farmers – to create an “allyship” between vegans and farmers." This part's really truly cool! This is what I hope to see more of - helping out farmers to show what kindness is and then explaining where more of the niceness is in veganism that is theirs, and how they can get there and bring them there. Veganuary members don't have a bunch of livestock to maintain - if someone wants them to truly go vegan - guilting and pushing them down into their ways further isn't going to mean anything only to plaster on something to replace them that doesn't work instead, and promote it as something that does. I've seen hopeful vegans fall apart over this - fall into the pseudo vegan trap too many times.
Helping farmers by supporting them, and being their with them in their struggles might be too hard for veganuary, and too messy, but it's what's needed to help out those who truly want to do better to be better. We shouldn't naysay and tear down everyone who isn't a vegan, but get people to where they need to go financially, emotionally, etc. to be stable and ready enough to do so. Since farmers support society 24/7, it's up to society to return the favor. Farmers are some of the least respected people around by society - so at least showing some empathy is like rain in a desert. They can feel good about themselves, and have that happiness infuse into veganism. Being shunned isn't what they'd want to bring in, and for good reason.
I lost respect for Plant Based News at one time, so they cleaned themselves up and I'm proud of that for them! Now it's vegan activist's turn to clean their act up as well.
